Woman in custody following chase through Reading

A wild ride came to a screeching halt in Reading on Monday.
The chase, police said, all started in the area of North 5th and Oley streets when an officer realized the car's license plate was not registered to the vehicle.
"We just heard, 'screech' and smelled the rubber burning," said a city resident who saw the car pass by.
The blue Hyundai Accent sped through traffic lights, ran stop signs and led officers on a high-speed chase down busy streets Monday, taking several twists and turns along the way, said police.
"About two to three blocks from down there I heard screeching, and I heard the car revving the engine to the stop sign," said Lenny Medina, who was in town visiting his girlfriend.
Police say the driver, 21 year old Julissa Salome-Martinez reached 50 mph at times, and never hit the brakes around Spring Street, said police.
According to neighbors, Martinez drove the wrong way down Locust Street.
"It was bad because cops were coming from every angle. It's a good thing nobody was driving this way because if they would, it would have been a big accident," said a woman on Locust Street.
Officers caught up with the car when it came to a screeching halt at a dead-end on Beech Street, near North 2nd.
Martinez and a passenger got out, left their doors open and bolted on foot, said police.
"Thank God it was during the winter. We didn't have kids out here playing or something," said Donald Patnelli, who heard the chase.
Both Martinez and the passenger in the front seat were caught in the area of Hudson Street.
When she was finally caught, officers said Martinez told them she was pregnant and hit the gas because she had outstanding parking tickets.
Police released the two passengers in the car, Martinez was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
