Officials said a mother was caught on camera beating her daughter in public and then abandoning her.
Fleetwood Police said it happened this summer at the Sheetz convenience store in Richmond Twp., Berks Co. The mother was arrested Tuesday on several charges, including assault.
Investigators said they have surveillance video. The DA's office is not releasing it to the public, but they said it shows the mom beating, dragging, choking and leaving her daughter.
This past July investigators said Jillian Boone Gonzales was seen chasing her 14-year-old daughter out of a car into the Sheetz in Richmond Township. They were traveling with family from Lancaster to New Jersey.
"It's our understanding that once the argument happened there was some physical altercation in the car," said Theresa Johnson, first assistant district attorney. "The grandmother pulled the car over so the mother could finish dealing with the daughter."
Johnson said surveillance video captured what happened inside and outside of the store.
"You do see the mother is repeatedly striking her daughter," said Johnson.
She said store employees used a panic button to call police while the fight was happening.
"What's disturbing her acts of trying to drag her out of the store by her hair and it appears she has wrapped some type of device around her neck to get her out of the door," said Johnson, "And you can see the daughter putting her feet up on different cabinets or shelving trying to stop herself from being drug out of the store."
Court documents said that device was a purse strap. And witnesses reported seeing clumps of hair on the floor.
Johnson said the fight ended after the victim's 12-year-old sister pulled their mother away.
"They left her there and went home to New Jersey," said Johnson.
Investigators questioned Boone-Gonzales. They said she admitted to hitting her daughter, pulling her hair and that leaving her was wrong.
"Her explanation is they had an altercation and that her daughter was being disrespectful to her," said Johnson.
Berks County detectives insisted New Jersey Children and Youth Services keep the victim away from her mother. She is staying with her father.
Boone-Gonzales is facing several charges and is free on bail.
