READING, Pa. -

A Reading resident who served our country more than 65 years ago received a hero's welcome Wednesday night.

James Lee Duncan, 83, was presented his high school diploma from the Reading School District.

Duncan was attending Reading High School when he enlisted in the US Army Air Corps back in 1946.Duncan received his diploma thanks to Operation Recognition.

It's federal legislation that allows school districts to grant high school diplomas to honorably discharged veterans.

Duncan says he feels like a new man.

"It's like a new day," he said. "I got something that I really appreciate. I appreciate the people who stood by me."

Duncan's just getting started.

He plans to attend Reading Area Community College to get an associates degree.
