The discovery of a suspicious package inside a school in Berks County created some tense moments Monday afternoon.
A staff member at the Berks Career and Technology Center's west campus in Bern Township found what officials said appeared to be a suspicious package in a school hallway around 1 p.m., said Robert Lees, the BCTC's administrator.
The school evacuated its staff and approximately 400 students to an off-site location and called police, who then called the Reading Police Department's bomb squad, Lees said.
The bomb squad determined the package was not explosive, allowing for the building to reopen around 3 p.m., said Lees, who declined to reveal the contents of the package.
The school, Lees said, is conducting an investigation to determine the origin of the package.
