READING, Pa. -

An effort to give needy folks a hot meal has grown a lot in the past four years.

Volunteers served free meals all day Tuesday at the Queen City Restaurant in southwest Reading, but this year, anyone who came out got so much more.

Thanks to some generous donors, People First gave anyone in need hats, gloves and scarves for the winter.

Organizers said they're ready to help as many as 1,600 people.

"We have people that come in year after year to volunteer, but we also have people that are coming in as a client to receive a meal and saying, 'This is such a wonderful experience. CanĀ  I volunteer next year?' It's a beautiful example of paying it forward," said Sharon Mast, chairwoman, People First committee.

Children got free books and pajamas. Free flu shots were also available.
