Prosecutors have filed murder charges against a man convicted of assaulting his girlfriend on the campus of Kutztown University.
Michael Morrone is already serving a five-to-20-year prison sentence for dragging Christine McGhee with his pickup truck across a campus parking lot in December 2008.
The third degree murder charge filed against Morrone on Tuesday stems from McGhee's death as a result of her injuries this past March, prosecutors said. The coroner ruled her death a homicide.
The assault was the result of a fight between McGhee and Morrone inside Morrone's pickup truck, prosecutors said.
Morrone told investigators he drove away with McGhee, then 20, of Warminster, Bucks Co., standing in the parking lot, however, a university security guard later found the K.U. sophomore lying in a pool of blood. Prosecutors said they determined she had been dragged across the parking lot.
McGhee was flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital near Allentown, but she never fully recovered from her injuries.
Morrone was later arrested in New Jersey and convicted by a jury of assault. A court date for the murder charge has not yet been scheduled.
