Investigation continues in stolen ambulance case

New details have emerged after an ambulance was stolen in Reading during a rescue call.
It happened Friday night in the 800 block of Franklin Street, and police told 69 News they may have a person of interest.
According to investigators, an arrest could happen in the near future, but they would not release any specifics.
Western Berks Ambulance is now telling crews to be more security conscious, and more aware of their surroundings.
"It certainly could have turned out much worse than it did," said Chief Ed Moreland, Western Berks Ambulance.
The change comes after a close call. Paramedics were picking up a patient in the 800 block of Franklin Street, but when they came outside the ambulance was gone.
The ambulance was stolen, and found a short time later abandoned at South 10th and South streets, said police.
"Nothing was taken from the vehicle and after an inventory, everything was found on the truck," said Moreland.
"I saw they were going around the ambulance with their flashlights and they said secure," said Stefanie Hodowanec, who saw the activity near her home Friday night.
Then, another bizarre twist. Witnesses told police they saw a man running from the area of the ambulance into a home in the 600 block of South 10th Street.
According to police, he complained of an asthma attack and was taken to the hospital, but they won't confirm if he is connected to the crime.
"In 20 years this is the first time I've been at an organization where an ambulance has been stolen," said Moreland.
Now, paramedics say the pattern going forward is to make sure it doesn't happen again.
"It certainly could have turned out to be a negative problem for everybody," said Moreland.
Investigators are aggressively working the case.
