Hundreds of unique items up for bid in Berks County this Friday

Berks County and nine of its municipalities are looking to clean house.
Hundreds of items are hitting the auction block and will be sold to the highest bidder Friday.
From boats to bookcases, even carriages and filing cabinets, the Reading Fairgrounds in Bern Township is stocked full of unique and rare items the county is looking to sell off.
"Instead of trying to get rid of them piecemeal for each department having certain sales, we decided we should have an auction," said Carl Geffken, the county's chief operating officer.
The municipalities are looking to do a little spring cleaning, too. Items that are otherwise collecting dust, and are not being used anymore, will be up for sale.
"You do need to get rid of them. It doesn't mean there still not usable. They're in excellent condition. Some of them look detailed and almost brand new," said Geffken.
Tractors, tires, school desks and other furniture have all been earmarked for public auction. You could even own an old police cruiser or pick up a new air conditioner for summer.
All the items will be made available for public viewing from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. Friday.
"The money that's generated is for the general fund that paid for the items. That money will go back to the general fund," said Geffken.
All the items are tagged and ready to go and will be sent home to the highest bidder on an "as is" basis.
The auction will begin at 9 a.m. Friday at the Reading Fairgrounds on Hilltop Road.
