Reading police are searching for a driver involved in a hit-and-run accident that sent a 4-year-old boy to the hospital.
Anthony Ortega was visiting his aunt in Reading with his parents. They were set to drive back home to North Carolina on Sunday, but they were forced to make a detour to the hospital.
Anthony spent more than 24 hours in the hospital recovering. His aunt said he was in a lot of pain, but so lucky his injuries are not much worse after being hit by the car.
"My sister-in-law had the little boy by the hand and they were crossing the street, and the car just came and hit the little boy," said Carmen Santiago, Anthony's aunt.
The accident happened around 2 p.m. Sunday in the 800 block of Moss Street. According to Anthony's aunt, three men were inside the car at the time. They pulled over, but when Anthony's parents tried calling police, the men took off.
"They tried to get them to stop, but they just got in the car and drove away," said Santiago.
Investigators recovered the dark blue Honda Civic involved in the accident, but no one has been arrested, said police.
Now, neighbors up and down the block are demanding people slow down.
"There's a lot of kids that play here on the street," said Lana Campbell.
"People just fly down here, like fly, and look how small this block is. You barely got any space," said Rafael Hernandez.
Investigators are hoping that after a search warrant is executed and the car is searched for fingerprints, they will have more information to work with, said police.
Anyone with information about the hit-and-run should call Crime Alert Berks County at 877-373-9913.
