Four people were rushed to a hospital from the scene of a head-on accident on Route 222.

RICHMOND TWP., Pa. -

Four people were rushed to a hospital from the scene of a head-on accident on Route 222 near Kutztown.

The crash happened around 1:30 p.m. Friday when a northbound car, driven by Vanessa Senquis, 27, of Reading, crossed the grass median and hit an oncoming car, driven by George Rand, of Phillipsburg, N.J., in the southbound lanes of the highway in Richmond Twp, Berks Co., police said.

Both drivers and their passengers were trapped in the wrecked vehicles for about 30 minutes before they could be freed by rescue crews, police said.

The four people were taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital near Allentown with what police on the scene described as moderate to severe injuries. None, however, appeared to be life-threatening, they said.

Route 222 South was closed for about an hour.
