A Berks County man will spend more than five years behind bars for threatening to blow up a bank during an attempted robbery.
Dragos Ungurean walked into the M&T Bank on Penn Avenue in Wyomissing last March 19 and threatened to detonate a bomb he claimed was attached to himself.
An off-duty Wyomissing detective, George Bell, happened to be inside the bank on personal business at the time and shot and apprehended Ungurean, 30, of Wyomissing. The bomb he claimed to have was fake, officials said.
Ungurean pleaded guilty to federal charges in June. He was sentenced Thursday to 63 months in prison and three years on supervised release.
The judge also referred to the actions of investigator Bell as “heroic” for subduing the defendant on his own.
During the hearing, U.S. District Court Judge Lawrence Stengel referred to Bell's actions of subduing Ungurean on his own as "heroic."
