A former St. Joseph Medical Center employee was arrested Monday on charges he defrauded the hospital of thousands of dollars.
Jose Luis Torres Jr., as a technician in the clinical engineering division, admitted he ordered supplies that were billed to the hospital and then sold them for personal profit between Nov. 2010 and Sept. 2011, detectives with the Berks County district attorney's office said.
The supplies, including high voltage cables and CT scan machines, were delivered to a FedEx facility near the hospital, where Torres would pick them up and reship them to the owner of a medical supply company in Baltimore, said detectives, adding that Torres received 50% of the supplies' actual value. Torres, detectives said, admitted receiving between $20,000 and $30,000.
Torres, 33, of Hampton, Ga., was charged with theft by deception, theft by unlawful taking or disposition and receiving stolen property.
