Deadly accident has resident worried about roads

A trip to the mailbox that turned fatal for one 73-year-old man.
Now residents in a quiet neighborhood in Greenwich Twp., Berks Co., are on alert, and hope the authorities will make some changes.
Ferdinand Jacker, 73, was killed after he was hit while crossing Old Rt. 22 in the Village of Klinesville around 4:45 a.m. Wednesday, police said.
"I was amazed when I came out here and saw all what had happened," said Bruce Schwaln, neighbor.
"There were fire trucks, state police, ambulance all over the place," said Butch Garis, neighbor.
Jacker was headed to his mailbox when he was hit by a 1991 Ford Thunderbird, investigators said.
Neighbors said it was not odd to see Jacker out and about so early in the morning.
They said he had to wake up early because he worked an early shift in Philadelphia.
But neighbors said Jacker's death is a symptom of a larger problem.
Despite the 35 mile an hour speed limit, neighbors said drivers often ignore the sign.
"The speed limit is 35, and nobody does the speed limit," said Garis. "They always do more than the speed limit."
Melody Schmidt said her kids always play in the backyard and never in the front of the house.
"You can hear motorcycles, cars go through, and they just fly through here like you wouldn't believe," said Schmidt.
Neighbors said the two-way road was recently paved, but the lack of road markings make the street a hazard.
Now as residents remember the death of their 73-year-old neighbor, they said they also hope the authorities will take action.
"It's a shame that someone had to pass away for something to be done," said Garis.
There is still no word on whether the driver will face charges. State police said once the evidence is gathered in the case, it will be presented to the Berks County District Attorney for possible charges.
