The Red Cross is helping a family displaced from a home that was damaged by fire early Monday morning.
The fire started just before 5:30 a.m. at a home at 4030 Friedensburg Rd. in Oley Twp., Berks Co.
Four adults and one child managed to escape the home unharmed, officials said.
"I always think it's a tragic thing when there's a fire like this in a small community because it could have affected all the houses in that row," said Charles Fegely, neighbor.
On top of the Red Cross lending a helping hand, neighbors are also pitching in wherever they can.
"It's a sad situation. I had talked with the oldest daughter and offered my assistance if she needed any clothing for her niece, and she said she'd get back to me. I think I did my part in helping the community," said Heidi Berger, neighbor.
"I've gone through this in my home when I was a small child," said Fegely. "You never, never get back what you lost because you lose a lot of valuable things."
The initial investigation is pointing to a wood stove as a possible cause of the fire, said Dep. Chief Dan Weiser, Oley Fire Co., adding that the home may be a total loss.
