Berks County firefighters were summoned to the scene of a multi-alarm fire in neighboring Lehigh County.

UPPER MILFORD TWP., Pa. -

Berks County firefighters were summoned to the scene of a multi-alarm fire in neighboring Lehigh County.

The fire was reported shortly before noon Wednesday at a company called Seedway, 5901 Vera Cruz Rd. S., in Upper Milford Township. That's about nine miles east of Mertztown, Berks Co., and nine miles north of Bally.

Flames were visible close to the scene, while a thick plume of black smoke that rose high into the air could be seen for miles around, from as far away as Blandon and Oley.

Among the Berks crews dispatched to the scene were a brush truck and its firefighters to extinguish flames that extended from the burning building to nearby brush, according to emergency dispatchers.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection sent an emergency response team to the scene, as well as inspectors to look at underground fuel tanks on the property.

There were no reports of injuries. A company employee described the damage done by the fire as minor.

According to the company's website, Seedway produces farm and turf seed for markets in 14 Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states.
