Police: 18 arrested in drug round-up

READING, Pa. -

A major drug round-up in Berks County led to 18 arrests Tuesday.

Investigators from across the county hit the streets at 6 a.m., and arrested one alleged drug dealer after another.

About 35 officers from the District Attorney’s Narcotics’ Unit, Reading Vice Unit, Pennsylvania State Police, Boyertown, Caernarvon, Colebrookdale, Exeter, West Reading, Wyomissing, and the Berks County Sheriff’s Department went out in teams Tuesday morning. Eighteen people in all were apprehended after the year-long investigation.

"The individuals arrested Tuesday were street-level and or mid-level drug dealers," said District Attorney John Adams.

The alleged dealers are accused of supplying some of the strongest substances including heroin, cocaine, prescription pills and marijuana.

"During the investigation, task force officers purchased amounts of controlled substances ranging from $20 - $250," said Adams.

Seventeen of the accused are from the city of Reading; another person is from Wernersville.

Aida Perez lives next door to one of the alleged dealers on Spruce Street in the city. She was home at the time of the round-up and was shocked.

"That's crazy living with somebody next door, we don't know who's there," said Perez. "Ten people live there and they just come in and out in and out, but nobody is ever there."

Police said the suspects were living in homes all across the city.

On South Sixth Street, Raiza Ramos was not necessarily surprised to hear an alleged dealer lived on her block, but glad he's been taken away.

"If it's not fights and arguments, it's people trying to get the money to do the drugs," said Ramos.

"Much of the violence that occurs in our county and in our city is a result of the drug trade," said Adams. "Today's effort was a joint effort."

Adams said his office has outstanding warrants for eight other people, and hopes to have them off the streets as soon as possible.
