50-car, 'domino-effect' pileup on Pa. Turnpike kills 1

A Pittsburgh man was killed and part of the Pennsylvania Turnpike was shut down for five hours after a chain-reaction crash involving more than 50 vehicles Sunday.
Andrew Fisher died at the scene after being hit by a car that lost control during the brunt of Sunday's snowstorm, said police.
Tractor trailers were jackknifed, and countless others were turned sideways after the tragedy on the turnpike.
"It looked like chaos," said Chief Joe Carmen, Elverson EMS. "We get multiple accidents whenever there is ice or snow, just normally not that many vehicles are involved."
Fifty-six vehicles were involved in the pileup Sunday afternoon. It started with a crash near mile-marker 300 on the westbound side near Morgantown, Berks Co.
Fisher, 35, walked behind his car and tried to help another driver, but he was struck by another vehicle. The car lost control and hit Fisher while he was standing on the embankment, said police.
"We were out in it. It was treacherous," said Elmeda Good, who lives right off the turnpike.
Good and her husband were on their way back from church when they realized something was wrong.
"We looked toward our house and it was double lane bumper to bumper," said Raymond Good.
"The road was snow-covered, so we could tell nobody was traveling and that it was closed," said Elmeda Good.
Members of the Twin Valley Fire Department and Elverson EMS responded and helped treat people on scene.
Now, with more snow in the forecast for Tuesday, they're stressing safety.
"If you're involved in an accident and there's no immediate need for you to get out of the vehicle, such as fire, just stay inside until police or EMS to show up," said Carmen.
The majority of those accidents were fender benders. It remains under investigation.
