Baseballtown to host 222 showcase

The talent of the top two affiliates in the Philadelphia Phillies farm system will be on display when the Double-A Reading Fightin Phils host the Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs in the seventh annual 222 Showcase exhibition game at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading on April 1. Game time is 6:35 p.m. with all gates opening at 4:00 p.m. to kick off the 2014 season. Parking is free for this event.
Due to the contribution of the game’s presenting sponsor, Capital BlueCross, all ticket money from the 222 Showcase will benefit Baseballtown Charities, helping more kids in the City of Reading play baseball.
“It’s is a great thing for our players to be able to break camp in late March and play for the first time as a team together while being able to prepare for the season by playing under the lights and in the tougher weather elements for the first time, as well,” said Phillies Assistant Director of Player Development, Steve Noworyta, who is entering his 16th season with the organization. “And to be able to accomplish that while raising money for Baseballtown Charities makes this a perfect scenario.”
The Phillies’ top affiliates are separated by a mere 40 miles on U.S. Highway 222 – and both are located within 70 miles of Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.
The all-time series is now tied, 3-3, after the Fightin Phils held on for a 6-4 win last season at Coca-Cola Park on April 2. In that game, Reading took a lead for good on a two-run double by C Sebastian Valle in the top of the fourth inning. Both teams hold a 2-1 home advantage. A series recap appears below.
Numerous current Major Leaguers have played in this game, including Domonic Brown, Erik Kratz, Kevin Frandsen and Darin Ruf; and Cody Asche, Cesar Hernandez, Ethan Martin, J.C. Ramirez and Steve Susdorf all participated in last year’s contest prior to making their Phillies debut.
