Chevrolet updates its small truck with all-new Colorado

Chevrolet used the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show Wednesday to introduce its all-new Colorado small truck.
The small-truck market has been a bit of an oddity in recent years. When Ford discontinued the Ranger and Dodge stopped making the Dakota, General Motors was the only U.S. brand left making small trucks. The rest of the segment is populated with trucks from Japanese companies.
When it goes on sale in late 2014 as a 2015 model, Chevrolet expects the truck to be the most powerful among its competitors. The standard engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder, but a 3.6-liter V-6 will also be available. A 2.8-liter four-cylinder diesel engine will follow about a year later.
Chevrolet leaders are also quick to point at that even though the truck is smaller than the full-size Silverado, it’s still a Chevy truck. "Not everyone needs full-size capability, but they still deserve the strength and true-truck attributes that come in larger models,” said Jeff Luke, executive engineer for GM Trucks.
The Colorado will be available with a couple of different configurations. There’s a two-door extended cab and a four-door crew cab. The bed on the crew cab can be five or six feet long. Certain models will be able to tow more than 6,700 pounds.
Inside, you’ll find all the creature comforts you’d expect in a modern vehicle, like bolstered seats, plenty of storage places and available touchscreens.
Standard safety features include six airbags, stability control and a rear-view camera. Other safety items like a lane-departure warning system and a forward collision alert system will be available.
"It’s like the younger, more eager brother of the Silverado – a Chevy truck through and through, with great zeal and a spirit of adventure," said Ken Parkinson, executive director of Chevrolet Design.
