A-Rod suspended through 2014; Bastardo gets 50 games
Major League Baseball has suspended Yankees' third-baseman Alex Rodriguez through 2014. There were twelve other players also suspended by MLB, with Phillies reliever Antonio Bastardo among them.
A-Rod's suspension is the longest one related to PEDs in the league's history.
Commissioner Bud Selig said the driving force behind Rodriguez's big suspension was not only his use of banned substances, but his interference with baseball's investigation into the Florida clinic Biogenesis.
Rodriguez's suspension does not kick in until Thursday, giving him three days to appeal which he is expected to do. That will allow the three-time MVP a chance to play for the Yankees until his appeal has been heard.
A-Rod made his season debut with the Bronx Bombers on Monday night in Chicago.
Twelve other players were suspended for 50 games on Monday in relation to Biogenesis, effective immediately. One of them was Phillies' reliever Antonio Bastardo.
The lefty is the third Phillie in the last three years to be suspended for violating baseball's drug policy.
