Allentown woman tried to stab her own daughter
A 45-year-old Allentown woman who attempted to stab her daughter with a large kitchen knife was arrested by city police Thursday.
Police found Nancy Gardner sitting on a bed in her home, holding the knife in her hand and yelling that she was going to kill her daughter.
Police found the daughter uninjured. She had locked herself in a bathroom to avoid being stabbed and used her cellphone to call for help.
The incident happened shortly after 9 p.m. Thursday inside Gardner's home in the 700 block of Cedar Street.
Officers responding to the daughter's call for help found the front door of the home was open. They called for anyone inside to come to the door, but no one responded.
They heard a female yelling, so they went upstairs, where they found Gardner with the knife. She refused to drop it until one police officer threatened to shoot her with his Taser. Police then handcuffed her "for her safety and ours."
Even after being handcuffed, the woman continued to yell that she was going to kill her daughter and that she "better watch out because she is dead."
The daughter told police they had been arguing because police had not removed the younger female from the home after they had a previous argument. She said her mother threatened to stab her, went outside, returned with the knife and tried to carry out her threat.
The younger woman fled into the bathroom and locked the door.
Gardner was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, simple assault, harassment and terroristic threats.
Unable to post $50,000 bail, she was committed to Lehigh County Prison.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. April 3
