Al Boscov, stores' former 'voice' share stories with friends

The former voice of Boscov's, who came up with the well-known line, "Did you Boscov today?" introduced Al Boscov to some new friends in Spring Township.
Robert E. "Bob" Smith and Al Boscov spoke at Country Meadows of Wyomissing Thursday afternoon. It's been Smith's home for 15 months.
"I call you Al," said Smith.
"That's right, and I call you Bob," said Boscov.
It was obvious that Boscov and Smith have known each other for years, and Boscov said he came to speak because he wanted to meet Smith's friends.
"I was a little concerned about Bob," said Boscov. "Bob said, 'I'm going to be moving into a senior citizen living center.' I said, 'Bob, you're living a very active life. Are you sure you're ready for that?' and he said, 'I think I am.'"
To a packed room, Boscov said, "You should have seen this guy," pointing to Smith. "He was cute as can be."
Boscov said he hired Smith after Smith left the news business.
"Bob Smith was with Reading's first television station and did a wonderful job," said Boscov. "He had a lot of charisma, a lot of humor, and he did a good job."
And Smith might have retired, but not completely because he's asked all the time to repeat his famous line.
"Did you Boscov today? Because if you did or if you didn't, you don't know what you're missing," said Smith.
Some even graduated from Reading High School with Mr. B in 1947 and had him sign their yearbooks.
"I knew I was going to meet nice people. Bob told me," said Boscov.
Smith said it was his idea to bring the department store owner to Country Meadows.
"They just needed to know what the full story was and also who Al Boscov really is," said Smith, "'Cause he's a fun, fun guy, and I have more respect for him than any human being alive. I don't know how else to say it."
