State Police said the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike had to be closed Christmas Eve from Clark Summit to Allentown due to numerous accidents.
A news release from Pennsylvania State Police indicated no one was allowed on the turnpike in the affected area "for a few hours". The Turnpike was reopened shortly before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike website warned of snow squalls throughout the area between Lansdale and Mahoning Valley. The squalls caused icy roadway conditions. Crews were treating the roadway throughout the night Tuesday, according to the Turnpike
Among the accidents reported;
A crash occurred in the left lane of the Northbound turnpike at about 6:17 p.m. between the Pocono and Mahoning Valley exits. The left lane was closed for a time after that accident.
About 20 minutes later an accident was reported in the same area on the southbound side. All lanes were closed southbound shortly after the accident. An estimated 10 vehicles were involved in that accident, according to State Police. All injuries appeared to be minor, police said. The accident was cleared shortly before 10:00 Tuesday night.
The trouble on the roadways wasn't limited to the turnpike.
An accident that occurred around 5:38 p.m. left Route 443 in Mahoning Township backed up for around an hour and a half.
Three vehicles were involved.
One person was injured. They were taken to Gnaden Heutten Hospital in Lehighton.
Dispatchers also reported Rt. 329 (Main Street) in Whitehall was closed between MacArthur Road to the Cementon Bridge due to icy conditions. Authorities said there were delays Route 145 in Whitehall due to road conditions.
Northampton County dispatchers also said slick conditions closed Newlins Mill Road between Tatamy and Bushkill Roads in Palmer Township late Christmas Eve.
