Man injured when pole hits minivan

WEST PENN TWP., Pa. -

A freak accident in Schuylkill County nearly cost a man his life Thursday.

Officials say a truck carrying cement blocks with a boom on top snagged some Verizon wires.. which caused the pole to snap.

They say the pole then fell onto a minivan that was traveling south on Route 309 in West Penn Township at Route 443

The pole snapped, causing part of the pole to fall through the minivan's windshield, police said.

The driver was trapped inside the vehicle until PPL crews could arrive and cut electricity to the lines that were attached to the pole.

The man was eventually freed from the wreckage and flown to St. Luke's University Hospital near Bethlehem.

Police on the scene had no information about the extent of the man's injuries.

The intersection of Routes 309 and 443 was closed while police conducted their on-scene investigation and crews removed the wreckage and debris.
