The way the schedule works in Berks County, we get back to back nights of rivals Wilson and Reading squaring off in basketball. Thursday night, the Wilson girls dominated the game on their home floor in a blowout win.
Friday night, the Red Knight boys hoped to return the favor on their home floor at
the Geigle Complex.
Reading's Jalan Branford also had the chance to score his 1,000th career point on the night. He accomplished that feat late in the first half when he drove inside and finished with the acrobatic lay-up.
But the Red Knights would not be able to enjoy the moment to its fullest extent.
Wilson's Travaun Coad and Matt Timochenko knocked down free throws in the game's final moments to give Wilson (4-2, 11-3) a 69-66 victory over Reading (5-1, 8-8) at the Geigle Complex. The game was a back-and-forth contest all night, but Wilson's 14 free throws in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference.
Coad led all scorers with 18 points. Stevan Rodriguez pitched in 13 while Bryan Fegley dropped 12 in the winning effort.
Branford paced the Red Knights with 17 points. Anthony Clay poured in 16 and Gilberto Benz had 10.
Wilson now trails Exeter and Reading by one game for first place in Berks I.
At Oley, Wyomissing (5-1, 10-5) made a late surge in the fourth quarter to capture a key Berks III victory over Oley Valley (4-2, 8-6) 64-62 Friday night.
The Spartans outscored the Lynx by 10 points in the final quarter despite trailing for a majority of the game.
Wyo had four scorers in double-figures. Gerald Burns led the way with 16 points. Spencer Lloyd had 14, Joe Cacchione dropped 12 and Chase Hartman had 10.
Adam Kriebel had a game-high 18 points for the Lynx. Hunter Renninger added 10.
Wyomissing is now in sole possession of Berks III.
