We're just a month into 2013 and for many that means those New Year's resolutions are still in play and for a lot of us that means living a healthier lifestyle, perhaps saving some money. Well we're here to show you how you can do both.
What Can Davis Save Us is back and all this month we're going to be showing you how you can live clean and green without blowing the budget.
Soaps have been a TV staple for generations.
Soaps and cleaners are a billion dollar business in the U.S. with the average household spending upwards of $800 a year on cleaning products, but what if I told you you could save a lot of green by going green with all natural cleaners?
Great grandma sure did and now so does the blogosphere with places like Pinterest bubbling over with DIY cleaner recipes.
We'll learn more about that in a moment but first the science.
"Early 1900's Germany they were running out of animal fats so they had scientists working on synthetic replacements," said scientist Dick Close.
And commercial cleaners were born.
"In American they started about 70 years ago. Tide came on in the 1940's," said Close.
Before that great grandma used items you can buy in the grocery store.
In fact you can make most cleaners, including laundry detergent with just three or four ingredients.
In fact dozens of recipes are just a few clicks away.
We tried this one from "Justalittlenutty.com."
It calls for one bar of zote soap but any bar will do.
We got ours at Big Lots for 99 cents. We mixed it with a half cup of washing soda and a cup of Borax in a five gallon bucket.
And you get... pink goop.
But let it rest for 24 hours, mix it up again and voila!
Fill an old detergent bottle with half goop half water and you're good to go.
It makes enough for 10 gallons of laundry detergent all for just over a penny per load.
