We are back with more money saving tips for you.
This time we're sticking with our clean and green theme. We're talking clean eating and healthy DIY snack bars.
Whether it's for a quick breakfast, an in-between-meal snack or an afternoon pick me up, if you're like millions of others you've probably reached for a nutrition bar.
The nutrition bar industry is booming with sales topping 5 billion in 2011.
But for some bars the promise of being "healthy" may be as empty as their calories.
"A lot of time they're high in sugar," said nutritionist Whitney Butler. "If sugar is one of the first three ingredients than it probably has too much sugar."
But don't go into an organic panic. You don't need to bar the bars all together.
There are some all-natural, organic and whole food choices out there but those "buzz" words can be a real buzz-kill when you see the price.
"They're more expensive," said Butler.
Yes they are! $1.50, $2 even $4 per bar!
I don't think so.
How does less than 50 cents sound?
All you need are a few healthy ingredients from your grocery store and "the know how" to know how to make them yourself.
For that, turn your interest to Pinterest and a blogosphere filled with easy DIY bar recipes.
If you're a fan of the Date Driven Lara bars you'll like this DIY for peanut butter chocolate chip bars from "the wanna be chef".
Just take 8 ounces of dates grind them up, mix with a half cup of chopped peanuts, two tablespoons of peanut butter and a pinch of salt. Press them in a foil lined loaf pan, pop them in the freezer for a bit then cut into bars.
And last but not least if Clif Bars are your snack of choice but their price has you wanting to jump off one, here's "crunchy goodness" to the rescue with a copycat chocolate brownie clif.
You just need some rolled oats, flax seeds, honey, cocoa powder, chocolate chips, wheat flower and peanut butter mix it all up, press in pan and pop in the freezer.
Wrap your bars in wax paper and store in your fridge or freezer!
Two bars all under 50 cents for a savings of 75%!
