Wernersville celebrates 100th anniversary

People in Wernersville are celebrating the past and embracing the future as they celebrate the borough's 100th anniversary.
For some people, Wernersville might be another stop along Route 422 through Berks County. But others call it home.
"I just feel it is a neat little town. Having been raised in the metropolitan area of Philadelphia with two million people and coming up here to 2,500, it has been a neat experience. My wife is from the area, we both love the area, small town USA," said Wernersville Mayor Edward Evans.
And this small town has a lot to offer from friendly neighbors.
"I like small towns. The people are so close, they are so nice and in general, it is all fun," said Scott Weatherholtz of Wernersville.
"They are great. When it comes down to it, if someone needs money, they step up to the plate," said borough council member Richard Spittler.
To a historic train station.
"If you ever get a chance go through it, it takes you back to the 1920s when trains were coming through Wernersville, going taking people up to South Mountain. It is a walk back in time," said Evans.
That is why several people gathered at the borough hall to pay tribute to 100 years.
It was back in 1914 when the area seceded from Lower Heidelberg Township and created the borough of Wernersville.
Borough officials collected news articles and clothing and plan to bury it all in a time capsule for future generations.
"A legacy of what the past was because in 100 years, who knows what will be," said Evans.
