Tombstones toppled at local cemetery

Police are on the hunt for the vandals who desecrated a beloved cemetery in Berks County.
Officials at Aulenbach's Cemetery along Perkiomen Avenue in Mt. Penn., say over the past week, some cruel vandals have toppled almost 100 tombstones.
"Usually kids will come through, maybe knock down one or two stones, but we've never had anything as devastating as this, this is really, really a terrible tragedy," said Sandra Stief, the cemetery's superintendent and historian.
Some of the toppled tombstones actually belong to great veterans who fought in the civil war.
Other tombstones belong babies, lives taken way too soon.
"It is troubling, especially this time of year, with what's going on around the country. This is supposed to be a place where people are laid to rest," said Chief Anthony Garapoli, Central Berks Police Dept.
Cemetery officials say they have no money to fix all of the damage.
It will cost at least $20,000 to upright the toppled tombstones, officials said.
"We're hoping that Crime Alert: Berks will put out a reward and catch whoever did this, restitution to have this taken care of," said Stief.
Anybody with information on this crime is asked to call Crime Alert: Berks County immediately.
The number is 877-373-9913.
