A courageous K-9 helped Reading police nab man suspected of murder, officials said.
Jacob Santiago, 34, was arrested Monday inside his home in the 300 block of McKnight Street in Reading, police said.
Santiago tried to rob Alexander Stewart, 24, last Wednesday, just before 5:00 a.m., in the 200 block of Walnut Street in Reading, investigators said.
"The victim attempted to flee, to run away, and Jacob Santiago shot him at close range," said Sgt. John Solecki, Reading Police Department.
Stewart's body was later found on the parking lot of the GoggleWorks, police said.
A review of surveillance footage, along with interviews with neighbors, led police to Santiago's home in the 300 block of McKnight Street.
"The person who answered the door told us, the officers, that Jacob Santiago was, in fact, not in the house," said Solecki.
But minutes later, detectives said that very same person admitted that Santiago was in the home.
Officials said a K-9 was released and found Santiago on the third floor.
"The dog had detained him, and in the process I believe he received a bite wound, which he was treated for at the hospital," said Solecki.
Meanwhile, many who visited Entertainment Square said they are relieved police have made an arrest.
"I'm happy that they did, because I like to feel safe knowing that this person is arrested makes me feel better about coming around here," said Brianna Gustitus from Shillington.
"That's great police work, and it's a good thing, that's what downtown needs. This is a great place and it used to be tremendous in the 60s. It's got to be that way again," said Craig MacGregor from Reading.
Santiago is facing a list of charges including first degree murder and robbery charges.
This case is still under investigation, and police said more arrest are pending.
