A community in Caernarvon Township is mourning the loss of a beloved soccer coach.
Twin Valley soccer coach Dean Secord was driving down Route 100 in Chester County on Sunday morning with his two young sons when police say another vehicle hit him head on and he died.
"I could not believe it. I could not understand it at first. But after it sank in it was a lot of disappointment, devastated, crushed," said Twin Valley Athletic Director John Guiseppe.
Secord had been a head men's soccer coach for Twin Valley High School for the past 15 years. His passion was evident to both his colleagues and players.
"He is a passionate man about soccer, passionate man about the students and their involvement in athletics and he has been one of the greatest coaches we have had in the sense of truly knowing his players," said Guiseppe.
"Whenever he got there he looked like he wanted to be there and he always just inspired us to play hard and inspired us to be the best we could be," said soccer player Val Mokrejs.
One of the parents even tells us that Coach Secord was such a good mentor that he inspired her son to continue playing soccer.
"He had gone back to soccer. This was his first year with Coach Secord and he loved it. He really loved Coach Secord. He had a lot of respect for him. Coach Secord respected the boys," said parent Felicia Burnish.
Now just days after the tragic accident, the athletic director tells us the team has started the healing process and will recognize Coach Secord for the great man he was.
"We shared all the memories we had and all the good memories, everything he did for us and all the funny memories too. It has been hard on the team," said Mokrejs.
"The whole team is just heartbroken. They will come back though and they will do it for the coach," said Burnish.
A trust fund has been set up for his twin sons who survived the accident. The school also plans on having an alumni soccer game to contribute to the family.
