Season's first snowfall leads to many fender-benders, close calls

The first real snowfall of the season is one many won't soon forget. As the snow came down, the number of accidents piled up Tuesday in Berks County.
It was one close-call after another as heavy snow made for dangerous and slick conditions during Tuesday's morning commute.
It may have looked pretty falling on the trees, but when the snowfall started sticking to the roads, drivers came across one frightening image after another.
"I thought I was going to die because the truck was sideways, and I thought it was going to roll on us or something like we were going to hit it directly," said William Bruns, who was involved in an accident in Ruscombmanor Township.
Bruns was the passenger inside a Mack truck that came to rest behind a red garbage truck. They were part of a six-vehicle accident on Route 73.
Fire crews said they found the driver of one car in his back seat. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries, and luckily no one else was hurt.
"We get a lot of black ice in this stretch of the road, so we do get a lot of accidents in this stretch," said Dep. Chief Sharliene Bowers, Ruscombmanor Vol. Fire Dept.
There was another close call on Monocacy Creek Road in Amity Township. According to police, an SUV slammed into the back of a school bus filled with kids. There was minor damage to both vehicles, but no one was injured.
In Exeter Township, a white van was loaded onto a tow truck after another accident on Route 562.
A simple snowfall early in the season created chaos Tuesday for drivers.
"I had to get back on a few side roads, and I could see it starting to get slippery and then it just kept getting worse," said Tom Mavrakis, who was stuck in traffic for more than an hour.
