Bethlehem's latest homicide victim was at the wrong place at the wrong time, friends said.
A candlelight vigil Monday night remembered a young man gunned down outside a local strip club over the weekend.
Tyree Wimberly was shot to death just after 1:30 a.m. Saturday outside Scoobie's Gentleman's Club on Hanover Avenue, at the Allentown-Bethlehem city line, police said. According to friends and family, Wimberly, 21, was walking home from a nearby store and was not even inside the club.
"The guy was trying to sell him some weed that he didn't [want]; they didn't even smoke," said longtime friend Robert Favinger Jr. "He got mad at Ty because they didn't want it, I guess. He wanted to fight Ty, pulled out the gun and shot him."
Wimberly's mother said he had a smile that could light up a room and a generous heart to match.
"He just loved everybody," said Valerie Wimberly. "He'd give you the shirt off his back."
"Ty was a beautiful person," added friend Michael Bonilla.
Wimberly was a Liberty High School graduate, a former football player, and a recent father to a 2-month-old son. He recently completed technical school to become a carpenter.
"He had plenty of jobs. We never seen him," said Bonilla. "It's like work, work, work."
So far, police have made no arrests and are keeping tight-lipped about the investigation.
As for Scoobie's, the club opened last summer amid protests from some neighbors. The building has been the site of numerous bars and strip clubs over the past two decades.
"They did not clean this up," said neighbor Kerry Carl. "It's been a nuisance."
For Valerie Wimberly, none of that is bringing her son back.
"It's like a nightmare, and I can't wake up," she said. "It's not real."
