ALLENTOWN, Pa. -

Lincoln Leadership Academy Charter School in Allentown doesn't have a drama club, no chorus, not even a stage to perform on.

"This is my first year at Lincoln," explained Drama Teacher Julie Valenzuela. "And they've never done any musicals before."

But with a bare bones budget, and 40 students signing up to be a part of the production, the school pulled off the musical 'In The Heights'. The story is set over three days in the Washington Heights neighborhood in Manhattan.

"This is a whole new world for them and they have this amazing raw talent and this passion in their hearts," Valenzuela described.

On top of doing their first full-scale production, Lincoln also took home two nominations for the 12th annual Freddy Awards. One for Best Featured Dancer for freshman Mya Nales, and another for Luli Colon as Best Actress.

"My character was Daniela," Colon shared. "She was like this ghetto Hispanic who does salon work, she was a salonist, and she just talks a lot and gossips."

Both teens tell 69 News they never expected the nominations, and of course are hoping for wins tonight.

"Regardless if we win or lose, we still made history in our own school and that was a really big thing to be a part of," smiled Nales.
