HELLERTOWN, Pa. -

Despite a room packed with people supporting Saucon Valley School District’s current bus drivers, only two commented on the school board’s proposal to outsource transportation services.

It could be that those who attended Tuesday’s meeting favored silent support. Or it could be that Board President Michael Karabin eased the crowd’s fears by acknowledging the proposal is just that: a suggestion to be discussed.

“The board has not talked about doing away with any services of any sort with any of the support staff,” Karabin said before opening the floor to public comment.

Other board members explained the proposal arose from a sense of duty.

Board Member Lanita Lum said, “There’s been no discussion on this. And as far as I know, there’s no leaning either way. What it is, in my eyes, is being financially accountable to our community.”

Likewise, Edward Inghrim said his job “is to make sure we run a fiscally responsible school district,” and noted that there have been no tax increases in four years. “I see this as our fiscal responsibility. We are not trying to eliminate any jobs,” he said.

Accordingly, the board plans on engaging in the collective bargaining process in January. Solicitor Mark Fitzgerald said other cost-saving measures would be discussed with the drivers at that time.

Responses to the district’s request for proposal are due May 3.
