Quakertown approves Upper Bucks County Technical School budget

QUAKERTOWN, Pa. -

The Quakertown School Board approved the Upper Bucks County Technical School budget during Thursday night's school board meeting.

The approved budget for 2013 - 14 is in the amount of $9,180,705, which received unanimous approval from the present school board members.

Upper Bucks County Technical School saw more than $200,000 of increases for its operation which the school reduced to less than $75,000 through redistributing personnel, analyzing equipment and energy purchases. The final budget is only a .9% increase from the previous year, the goal being for an increase under 1.7%.

Dealing with an increase to the pension fund, maintenance of the building and failing infrastructure, Bernard J. Wagenseller, Executive Director of the school, spoke to the Quakertown School Board hoping to have the budget approved.

As a way of balancing their budget, the technical school has dipped into its fund balance which was questioned by Bob Smith, Board President.

"The goal is to not spend that money," said Wagenseller, "It has been an annual means of balancing the budget."

Upper Bucks County Technical School is seeing a failing infrastructure, as their boilers are over 40 years old, and will need updated heating, air conditioning and electrical systems. Wagenseller stated he plans to bring architect Kevin Godshall back to the board for a formal presentation on improvements the school will need in the future.

"The kids at the technical school are doing some wonderful things," Wagenseller stated, "It's not a separate place that kids go to.  You own us, we are you, we are a part of you."
