WILSON, Pa. -

The longtime treasurer of a club in Northampton County has been charged with stealing thousands of dollars.

Stephen Williams stole more than $45,000 from the Wilson Lions Club, said police, adding that he cashed 11 checks between 2010 and 2011 and kept the money.

Police said they launched their investigation of the alleged theft in August after the club's president, Jack Barr, found the money to be missing from the club's checking account.

Williams, 60, of Wilson, had been the treasurer of the Lions Club for about 10 years. He was charged with theft, receiving stolen property, theft by deception, and failure to make required disposition of funds.
