A homeless man was arrested for staying inside a Chinese restaurant after it closed and stealing money two weeks ago, officials said.
Miguel A. Rodriguez-Rodriguez hid in the bathroom of the Magic Wok, 601 Northampton St., Easton, past closing on Jan. 8 and took about $350 from a counter area, officials said.
Police were called to the Magic Wok by a pedestrian who spotted a man inside at about 10:30 p.m., officials said, adding that the man at first tried to hide his body and face but then begged the pedestrian not to call police because he was wanted on a warrant.
When police arrived, they searched the restaurant with owner Gui You Lin, but did not find the man, only a side door that had been forced open, officials said.
The pedestrian described the man, and Lin remembered seeing him enter his restaurant about 15 minutes before he locked up, officials said.
After being showed photos by police, Lin and the pedestrian photos identified the man as Rodriguez-Rodriguez.
Rodriguez-Rodriguez, 38, was arraigned early Thursday morning on charges of criminal trespass and unlawful taking and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $7,500 bail, according to court documents.
A preliminary hearing is set for 2 p.m. Jan. 31.
Rodriguez-Rodriguez was also arraigned on a drug paraphernalia charge in connection with a search of his home at 613 Ferry St., Easton, on Oct. 17, 2012, when police found hypodermic needles and crack pipes, officials said.
Bail in that case was set at $500, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for 3 p.m. Jan. 31, according to court papers.
