A Reading family is praying for the speedy recovery of a nearly 2-year-old boy.

READING, Pa. -

A toddler is recovering in the hospital after his parents said he was bit in the face by the family's pit bull.

Enrique Spearman, 23-months-old, was transported to Hershey Medical Center early Monday afternoon.

The toddler's father said his son will have to undergo reconstructive surgery to his face.

Family members said they were shocked by behavior of Atilla, their 4-year-old pit bull.

"Very shocked, because he's never done that before," said the toddler's mother, who did not want to reveal her identity.

Family members said they were also surprised because the toddler had been around Atilla his entire young life.

"It's weird, out of the blue, not expected, and it hurts on both parts because he [Atilla] is part of the family. So, I don't know," the mother said.

The father said he will have to get rid of Atilla because he can no longer trust the dog in the home along with the other young children.

Family members said the toddler, who will turn 2-years-old this month, is expected to be okay.
