PHILLIPSBURG, N.J. -

During Tuesday night's Phillipsburg Town Council meeting, Police Chief James Faulborn reported that the police department will be issuing warnings to individuals walking in the roadway, effective immediately.

The department's decision is in response to complaints from community members about students walking in the roadway after being dismissed from school.

After Jan. 15, police will begin issuing summonses to individuals violating the law, Faulborn said.

"It should be noted that the Phillipsburg Police Department, along with the Phillipsburg School District, has sent out notices to students regarding this issue at the beginning of the school year," Faulborn said in a press release. "The problem still persists, therefore enforcement action is necessary to prevent a pedestrian accident."
