A night out with his wife led to country music singer/songwriter Pat Garrett buying more than just dinner.
Garrett and his wife, Suzy Dalton, were dining at The Bridge Inn on Route 73 in Oley Twp., Berks Co., when his son, Dan, mentioned that the current owner was looking to sell the restaurant.
Dan, who has helped out at the restaurant on weekends for the past few years, told his dad that he and the chef/manager, Brian Favinger, were interested in owning it.
After a few discussions, Garrett said they decided to buy the restaurant, which is located in the village of Pleasantville, between Oley and Boyertown.
"Brian is the head chef and sees to every dinner that is served, while Dan watches the many business details required to make a successful restaurant and bar," Garrett said.
Garrett is no stranger to The Bridge Inn, having performed there with his band over the years.
The restaurant's lower level includes a newly remodeled dining room and a martini lounge that features live music on the weekends.
"They, of course, have a full bar if martinis aren't your thing," Garrett said.
The upstairs features a softly lit dining room, which Garrett said is his wife loves. Warmer weather allows the restaurant to open its backyard dining area.
"The word is spreading that The Bridge Inn is the 'it' place to be," said Garrett. "You might even see Suzy and me there, hanging out, trying to score a free dinner."
The Bridge Inn, located on land that was acquired from William Penn in 1714, has quite a bit of history. The inn, built sometime before 1848, was one of five located along the Oley Turnpike when the toll road opened to the public. It's the only one still in operation, surviving as a speak-easy during prohibition.
