The state's Department of Public Welfare has launched a web site aimed to help families and parents of children with autism
The initiative was launched this week by the Autism Services Education Resources and Training Collaborative (ASERT), a program funded through the state's Department of Public Welfare.
The initiative is in response to the 2005 census findings by the Bureau of Autism Services of the people living in Pennsylvania diagnosed with autism.
“One of the main things we found is that people across Pennsylvania have difficulty getting access to all kinds of autism information, particularly those people in rural Pennsylvania” said spokeswoman for the Department of Public Welfare, Anne Bale.
The department launched the web site www.paautism.org on Monday.
Anyone can get access to the resources, care and assistance they need among other things such as “What providers are available, who's out there that can help you it talks about the latest research information so what's new on the front of autism, what kind of information do people need to learn about” said Bale.
There's also a toll free number 1-877-231-4244 where all the information is available in a referral service.
It's a service the Department of Public Welfare hopes Pennsylvania families will tap into to help a current population of over 30 thousand.
“It's still very new and that's why we needed to compile all the information that is out there and give people access, sort of a one stop shop to the information” said Bale.
