A carjacker slipped through the fingers of state police after leading them on a high-speed chase, authorities said.
The carjacking happened around 8:30 p.m. Monday in an alley behind Supreme Cleaners in the 1600 block of Lancaster Avenue in Cumru Twp., Berks Co., investigators said.
The victim had just left the cleaners and was getting into his rental car.
A woman approached the victim and repeatedly asked him to use his cell phone, investigators said.
When the man refused to hand over his cell phone, a man with a gun appeared and threatened the victim's life, authorities said.
"And he threatened the victim with death if he didn't turn his vehicle," said Det. Sgt. George Kuriger, Cumru Twp. Police Dept.
The man and woman fled the scene in the rental car, and the woman was later dropped off, detectives said.
The man was later spotted driving erratically in the area of Routes 30 and 283 in Manheim Twp., Lancaster Co., investigators said.
Authorities said he refused to pull over and then fled at speeds in excess of 120 miles per hour.
During the pursuit, a pit maneuver was attempted, which caused the vehicle to descend into a ditch and an empty field, state police said.
The man finally escaped on foot, eluding police. He is described as a black man, 25- years-old, 5 feet, 8 inches tall.
His accomplice is described as a Hispanic woman, 35-years-old, approximately 140 pounds, with dark, shoulder-length hair.
Those who know the victim said he was driving a rental car because he was in a car accident last week.
