If you're looking for some relationship advice on this Valentine's Day, Clayton and Beatrice Herb are your go-to husband and wife. The Schuylkill County couple have the distinction of being the longest-married couple in Pennsylvania.
If you were to walk in the Herbs' shoes, the one thing that has not changed is their devotion and love for one another.
"The first time we met, that was a long time ago. That was in grade school," said Beatrice.
Clayton, 97, and Beatrice, 93, grew up in Schuylkill County, knowing they were meant for each other at a very young age.
"I was 14. Yeah, and he was 18," said Beatrice.
Since it was not legal to marry that young in Pennsylvania, the couple, with the blessings of both of their parents, hopped in a car and got hitched elsewhere.
"In Maryland there were lots of preachers at that time. You just picked and you just went. Rev. Carter was his name," said Beatrice.
They were married on June 29, 1933.
"Did I have an engagement ring before we got married?" asked Beatrice.
"Oh, I don't know," replied Clayton.
"It's too long ago," said Beatrice.
The couple will celebrate their 80th wedding anniversary in June.
"We've been married a long time, and you don't think it's going to last that long, but it did," said Beatrice.
So, how did the couple keep their love alive for so long?
"When arguments come up, try to not get too mad at one another. Settle your arguments," said Beatrice.
Their 79-year marriage now spans five generations. According to the Worldwide Marriage Encounter, the Herbs are the longest-married couple in Pennsylvania.
"You don't know how long you're going to be married for. You don't know when you're going to die," said Beatrice.
Looking back at all they have experienced together, the couple said their love story is certainly rare, however, they believe it is their love that makes their lives worth living.
"I love you," Clayton told Beatrice.
