Onlookers mourn loss of Jersey boardwalk

SEASIDE PARK, N.J. -

Crowds gathered along the beach Friday to see for themselves the devastation from Thursday's boardwalk fire. Many people had their cameras out and snapped pictures of the smoldering remains of the popular spot.

Sharon Krampetz of Lanoka Harbor, New Jersey said the candy shop where she had her first job as a teenager is one of the destroyed businesses.

"Really sad. They tried so hard to build this back up and they have to start all over again," she said about the beach town still recovering from Superstorm Sandy.

Bruce Sprague lives a few houses down from the boardwalk and watched the fire spread Thursday.

"It looked like somebody just dropped a bomb and fire all over," he described. "If you don't have a boardwalk here, you don't have a town."

Jim Mulligan of Brick, New Jersey is in Seaside Park for work and also witnessed the fire."It's devastating, it really is," he said. "They just started coming back and now this happens. I don't know what they're going to do now."

Mulligan is hopeful for the area's future. He said, "They'll come back, they'll come back. It'll be built back up again."
