Police are investigating a shooting that took place just blocks away from William Allen High school in Allentown.
Police say they received the call at 2:55 p.m. Wednesday, a report of a young female victim with a gunshot wound to the leg in the area of N. 16th and Turner streets.
Neighbor Sandra Graves said she went outside after hearing shots ring out.
"We see a bunch of kids across the street by West Park and they're yelling, 'she got shot, she got shot'," said Graves.
Graves said she and her son went to help the young woman who was shot and flagged down a police car to call for an ambulance, Graves stayed with the girl until help arrived.
"I looked at her and said 'you're going to be okay. I said listen to me I'm your mom right now at the moment. Just follow my words, you're going to be ok,'" Graves said.
Allentown School District Superintendent Russell Mayo said they're working with police in their investigation and plans to address the issue Thursday morning.
"Tomorrow we will beef up security at Allen High School. We'll have additional security of our own. There will be additional police in the area," said Mayo.
The girl was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital -Cedar Crest where she is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
