NORTHAMPTON, Pa. -

The Borough of Northampton Council dealt with a series of community issues during their public workshop meeting held Thursday night.

It was noted that the borough has received approval from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to change the timing of the traffic lights at Ninth and Main streets, according to Vice President Robert McHale.

The lights were changed between 4:30 and 6 p.m., according to Borough Manager Gene Zarayko to better elevate traffic congestion with the bridge over the Lehigh River that is just south of Saylor Park.

“It seems as if it’s going OK,” said President John Yurish. “We’ve done everything we possibly can. I don’t like to be a sour puss here but it’s called ‘traffic.’…We’ve been very proactive instead of reactive and we’ve added the seconds on. PennDOT was very responsive and I think we’ve done we can do to elevate some traffic at that intersection and I think it’s moving a lot faster than it was.”

In addition all permits have been issued for a new pizza shopt at the former Pappy’s Pizza Restaurant at 11 E. 24th St. The new Mundello’s Pizza and Italian Ristorante is set to open in that locale April 1st, according to McHale.

And Councilman Anthony Lopsonzski Jr. announced that the annual borough Easter Egg Hunt will take place at 11 a.m. on March 23rd at Municipal Park at Laubach Avenue and Smith Lane. A rain date is set for 1 p.m. on April 24th. The event is open to all borough residents ages 10 and under.
