ROAD NAME: PA 412
BETWEEN: Wagner Avenue AND Daly Avenue
Type of Work: Construction
Type of Restriction: 24hours
RESTRICTION: Traffic will be reduced from two lanes to a single lane on PA 412 north and south for roadway widening work. The work is part of the ongoing $35,922,299 PA 412 widening project that began in March 2012 and is anticipated to be complete in August 2015.
Motorists in the Lehigh Valley will soon be enjoying a safer and smoother PA 412 thanks to some major improvements planned for this corridor in Hellertown and Bethlehem, Northampton County.
The PA 412 Project involves the reconstruction and widening of PA 412 between Cherry Lane in Hellertown Borough and Daly Avenue in the City of Bethlehem. The project also includes improvements to the PA 412 Interchange with Interstate 78.
Preliminary work to construct detention basins is scheduled to begin March 29 between Wagner and Lynn Avenues. This work will not entail any lane restrictions, however motorists should be alert for slow moving construction vehicles entering or exiting the roadway. PennDOT will continue to provide updates as work progresses.
The project is designed to reduce congestion and increase safety for the 20,750 vehicles travelling PA 412 each day. Work will include widening the roadway to accommodate two southbound and three northbound travel lanes between I-78 and Shimersville Road; a northbound collector/distributor lane between I-78 and Commerce Center Boulevard for right turn traffic; widening and adding turning lanes at the intersections with the I-78 east and west ramps, Commerce Center Boulevard, Shimersville Road, Emery Street and Lynn Avenue; replacing the bridge over Saucon Creek; new traffic signals; adding bus pull-off areas to enhance safety for transit riders; drainage improvements; line paint; and other miscellaneous construction.
This is a design/build project, which means the contractor, HRI, Inc. of State College, Pa., is responsible for the final design and construction on the $35,922,299 million project. They are currently finishing aspects of the final design, and major road construction is expected to begin this spring. The project is expected to be complete in August 2015. All schedules are weather dependent.
