Nomination nerves: Students wait anxiously for Freddys announcement
High school students across our region were on pins and needles Thursday. The 2012 Freddy Award nominations were announced live right here on WFMZ.
In the world of high school musical theater, it doesn't get much bigger than this.
"It's always a fun day," said William Marshall from Parkland High School. "I always get excited for it so being able to watch the nominations is something awesome that happens every year."
Hundreds of high-schoolers across our region had nomination nerves. Including students at Parkland High School in South Whitehall Township, Lehigh County.
"Just a whole lot of anticipation cuz you hear the names called off and your waiting, your waiting, your waiting," said student Steve Titus.
Fingers were crossed, legs were bouncing. And then it happened.
Again and again Parkland students heard their name called. The excitement even bringing some to tears.
The school's performance of Hello Dolly took home 12 nominations.
"I think every year's really different, I never expect anything," said Musical Director Frank Anonia. "I'm always really proud of what my students can accomplish, we work really hard so this stuff's just icing on the cake."
The spotlight was also on Liberty High School in Bethlehem. Students sat on the edge of their seats in anticipation.
"I was really nervous, yeah, I was kinda shaking over there," smiled Ellen Schmoyer.
Their rendition of Les Miserables brought in three nominations. Including Darah Donaher's nod for outstanding solo vocal performance. She played Eponine.
"I could not have asked for a better way to end my Liberty theater experience," said Donaher.
The company was working with a new director, and half the cast had never performed before.
"We had a very successful show," said Musical Director Julie Mixtacki. "It sold out almost every night, standing ovations, that's what important.
Freedom High took home the most nominations with 17.
In two weeks these students will take center stage again at the 2012 Freddy Awards.
