READING, Pa. -

The Reading School Board has a new president and vice president following the sudden resignation of one member and the relinquishing of leadership by board president Robert F. Heebner, Jr.

Board members voted vice president Pierre V. Cooper to the position of board president following a 5-1 vote Wednesday night.

The board then voted member James Washington II to fill the position of vice president following Cooper’s promotion after another 5-1 vote.

The board also accepted the resignation of board member Frank B. Denbowski. Denbowski, who was absent at Wednesday’s meeting, announced in a letter Monday night that he was leaving the board to focus on his fulltime job as Reading’s recycling and solid waste manager.

Heebner, who was also absent at Wednesday’s meeting, said Monday that he would be stepping down as board president due to health concerns, but added that he would remain on the board.

Heebner was appointed board president in December, replacing Yvonne L. Stroman who served only one year as board president.

Given the high turnover rate, Cooper stressed the importance that the board members work together as a whole. “We need to get our act together and start working as a nine member board,” Cooper said following his appointment.

The board has 30 days to find and appoint a replacement for Denbowski’s seat. The candidate would only be on the board until December. Then a special election will be held to find a replacement for Denbowki’s remaining two years.
